I was restoring an old mirror frame that belonged to my grandmother and wanted to try gilding for the first time. This imitation silver was perfect for a beginner like me. The sheets were thin enough to work into the carved details but not so delicate that they fell apart. I used a basic adhesive size and a soft brush to apply them. The end result looks incredibly authentic and my family was shocked when I told them it wasn’t real silver leaf. Only complaint is that a couple sheets in the pack were slightly torn, but there were plenty extra to work with.

I restore vintage picture frames as a hobby and have used both real and imitation leaf over the years. This particular brand is surprisingly good quality for the price point. The sheets are uniform in thickness and have a nice bright silver color that photographs well. I’ve noticed they don’t patina the same way real silver does over time, but for most applications that doesn’t matter. They’re especially good for filling in tiny crevices on ornate frames where you’d waste expensive real leaf. My only critique is that the backing paper sometimes sticks a bit too much, making it tricky to separate on humid days.

I’ll be honest, I was skeptical about using imitation instead of real silver leaf, but I’m so glad I tried this. I redid all the mirror frames in my bathroom and the result is stunning. The application process was easier than I thought it would be, though I did watch a few YouTube tutorials first which really helped. A couple of the sheets had small tears in them right out of the package, but I just used those pieces for smaller areas and it worked out fine. The color is a true silver, not too gray or too bright. Very happy with this purchase and I’ve already recommended it to friends!
