Genuine Gold Leaf Sheets

Genuine gold leaf, just like any other genuine metal leaf such as real silver leaf, is a thin metal sheet. These metal sheets being used for the purposes of gilding an assortment of different surfaces with the lustre of real gold. Some such examples include a wide variety of options such as plastic, ceramic, glass, wood, paper, stone, fabric and an assortment of other materials.
Now, of course, there is a wide variety of options you can use for imitation gold leaf. However, here we talking about using top quality gold leaf that uses real gold instead of imitation gold leaf. No instead, here this is about applying genuine gold to a surface rather than any form of a replica.
The other option for genuine gold leaf though is to buy it in a patent leaf format. Also known as transfer leaf, these types of genuine gold leaf will be pressed into tissue paper or wax paper, within booklets that are slightly larger than the sheets themselves. The benefit of which is that this allows you to press the gold directly into a adhesive covered surface. Additionally, it also grants the opportunity to shape the gold leaf on the paper beforehand.

FAQ - Genuine Gold Leaf

How can you tell if gold leaf is real?

When it comes to gold leaf there are genuine and imitation options. Genuine gold leaf in particular though can be identified by the fact that it will not tarnish or become dull over time due to environmental exposure.

What is a genuine gold leaf?

Genuine gold leaf is thin sheets or flakes of gold often used for the purposes of gilding surfaces.

Is gold leafing real gold?

Gold leaf can come in either imitation or genuine variations. The latter of which can come in varying levels of purity from 12 to 24 karats.

Does genuine gold leaf tarnish?

Genuine gold will not tarnish if it is very pure. However, lower purity gold leaf may tarnish if not treated with a sealant.
Either way, when you are trying to cover a surface with gold leaf, a book of twenty five will cover approximately two square feet. Meanwhile a pack containing five hundred sheets of genuine gold leaf will cover a roughly thirty two square foot area. That said though, for a curved surface a larger quantity of gold leaf will likely be required.

Loose Leaf Sheets

Loose leaf gold is a variation of gold leaf that come in packaged in booklets. Each of which will be contained within their own individual tissue paper compartment. The result of which being that these booklets make it incredibly easy to remove and use the silver sheets in question. Following which, the gold leaf can then be dropped straight from the booklet onto your gilder's cushion. Alternatively, you can also use a gilder’s knife to carefully remove the gold leaf to place on your gilder's cushion.

Patent Sheets

The other option for genuine gold leaf though is to buy it in a patent leaf format. Also known as transfer leaf, these types of genuine gold leaf will be pressed into tissue paper or wax paper, within booklets that are slightly larger than the sheets themselves. The benefit of which is that this allows you to press the gold directly into a adhesive covered surface. Additionally, it also grants the opportunity to shape the gold leaf on the paper beforehand.

  1. James Wilson –

It works but some sheets were damaged in the package. Still usable though.

  2. Samantha J. –

Surprisingly easy once you get used to handling it.

  3. Jacqueline M. Ganim –

My husband is using this to gold leaf an exterior sign at a local bank. He was quite impressed by the product. It is as described. Also very impressed with the speed at which it was delivered. The photo is the “before” photo, after photos to be added later. It goes on with a matte finish, not overly shiny.

  4. Steve –

    No issues, worked as advertised.

  5. Michael –

Nothing terrible to report, if you want gold and you want it in sheets, here it is..

  6. Nicole Henderson –

The color is really pretty, more of a warm gold than a bright yellow gold. I used it on some decorative boxes I was making for gifts and everyone loved them. Application takes some practice but once you figure out the right amount of adhesive and timing it goes smoothly. I did have one or two sheets that were torn in the package but out of the whole set that’s pretty minimal. Would purchase again for future projects.

  7. Christopher Lee –

If you’ve used gold leaf before, this is pretty much what you’d expect. Nothing fancy but reliable. The adhesive backing makes it easier for small projects. I used it on some picture frames and a decorative mirror. One tip – make sure your surface is completely smooth and clean or you’ll see every imperfection through the leaf. Overall good product for the money.

  8. Heather Mills –

I’ve been using this to add gold accents to handmade greeting cards and small wooden ornaments. The sheets are the right size for detailed work and don’t flake off too much when I’m cutting them. My only tip would be to work in a space with no air movement at all – even a slight breeze will send these flying. The adhesive I’m using seems to work well with this particular leaf. Very pleased overall and the pack will last me a long time since I only use small amounts.

  9. Robert Thomson –

This gold leaf had good reviews from professional gilders so I trusted it for my first project. I think it turned out pretty good.

I’ve included some photos of the process.

I had printed out elvish letters, pasted them to a block of wood and routed them out with a palm router using an 1/8 inch ball nose end mill.

Using the knife I cleaned up any wood burrs.
In a dust free environment, I applied the gilding adhesive. I waited for it to set up. Then I applied the gold leaf. Then sanded off the excess with an orbital sander. Brushed out the dust,…coated with my choice of finish. (I highly recommend Odies Oil). Blew off excess finish in routed grooves with an air nozzle and buffed off surface.

I’m sure I made a bunch of mistakes and I’m probably forgetting a bunch of steps and plus I wasted a lot of gold but this is just a review not a gilding tutorial. This is what I used it for. I didn’t eat any of the gold.

If you’ve never tried it, gilding is fairly simple and easy. Watch a couple YouTube videos to start then keep learning. I want to do more gilding in the future and will buy more from Mr. Goldblatt. Thanks Barnabas you the man.

Used half the pack so far, no problems yet.
