Genuine, not imitation gold leaf
NOTE!! 22kt Gold has 22kt of Genuine Gold in the metal leaf. There are other metal leaves out on the market that are called “Goldleaf” because of their appearance, but they are in fact a copper zinc alloy, and have ZERO gold in them. The industrial term for these leaves is called imitation gold leaf, or composition leaf. These leaves are used for mass production of furniture and frames. However, they will oxidize and change color over time. You can test if they are composition leaf if you spray water or put vinegar on their raw surface (i.e. prior to putting on varnish or coatings).
Larger gold leaf sheets than typical
Please also note that our leaves are industrial class gold sheets. The sizes are almost 4 times as large as other gold leaf sheets you see on the internet (usually their size is 1 3/4″ x 1 3/4″ but it is claimed to be approximately 2″ x 2″).

Gold Leaf Sheets for Crafts
Using genuine gold leaf sheets for a craft project is undoubtedly an awesome way to add glamor to an existing piece. DIY craft projects that involve jazzing up planters, ornaments (INTERNAL), frames, a surface, and more are all worthy candidates for this regal and sophisticated upgrade.
Still, you may be wondering what tools you'll need to actually help your genuine gold leaf sheets to stick. After all, you aren't paying the price of genuine gold leaf sheets for nothing, right? Believe it or not, the tools needed to apply gold leaf are relatively simple. Stay tuned for easy-to-follow details below.
What You Need For Your Gilding Projects
When using gold leaf sheets for crafts, you'll typically need the following supplies:
- Primer (depending on project)
- Gold leaf (or gold flakes)
- Varnish or topcoat
It is important to note that when embarking upon a new gold leafing project, which tools you'll need will change depending on the type of project you're taking on. The aforementioned supplies are just the basics to get you started, but certain details, such as the adhesive type, may vary depending on the project and your needs.
Once you've gathered the above equipment, you'll generally want to first apply a primer if using, then your adhesive, and then your gold leaf. The brushes are used for the application of the primer and adhesive and a separate clean and soft brush for tamping down the gold leaf while also clearing away any excess.
Please note that when using genuine gold that is less than 23 karats top coat or varnish is advised. This will make it more difficult for the gold leaf to tarnish or wear off with time.
Remember that the above instructions may not apply to every project, however, it is a good starting point for when you want to apply gold leaf sheets to a hard surface for the purpose of crafting.
Bear in mind that there are also gold leaf kits for crafts available that can make your life much easier when it comes to purchasing and applying gold leaf to a specific project. Just be sure never to attempt to eat the gold leaf found in these craft boxes, as they are likely not edible (unless specifically marked as so) the way that some types of gold leaf sheets are.
We hope this has helped to inform you about the many ways you can use gold leaf for crafts. As always, thank you for your patronage.
