Loose vs Transfer Leaf Explained
Gold leaf comes in two main formats: loose leaf and transfer leaf.
Loose leaf is extremely thin and delicate. It is not attached to anything, which gives you full control during application. This makes it ideal for experienced users and detailed work. However, it can tear easily and requires careful handling.
Transfer leaf is attached to a backing paper. This makes it much easier to handle, especially for beginners or when working on vertical surfaces. You can position it more precisely and avoid tearing.
What Is Oil Size?
Oil size is a slow-drying adhesive used for gilding. You apply it, wait until it becomes tacky, then place the leaf on top for a strong, durable bond.
Can I Burnish Oil Gilding?
No. Oil gilding cannot be burnished because the surface is not hard enough. It results in a satin or matte finish, not a mirror shine.
How to Seal Silver Leaf
Apply a clear sealer or varnish after the leaf sets. This protects it from tarnishing and keeps the finish looking clean and bright.
Common Beginner Mistakes
